this was apparently released last week in the UK. have yet to see a review, but based on the tracklist alone, this easily qualifies as one of the compilation/reissues of the year, essentially combining the best of their two albums (save for Kangaroo Court, which always struck me as a bit silly).

mitchell, any write-ups over there?

i love this band.
Very Metal
A little over ten years ago I was trading mixtapes with a Canadian girl and driving to Toronto on free weekends. She was heavily into Britpop and poppy shoegazer. Adorable, The Pale Saints, and Revolver were the secret weapons. Though "Sunshine Smile" is the only track I go back to Adorable wise. (Similarly, it's "You Tear The World In Two" for Pale Saints and "Heaven Sent An Angel" for Revolver.) I'll have to reminisce with this comp.

i bought a Against Perfection on eBay for like 2 bucks last year simply because of this weird memory i had of that song "Homeboy" (played for me by a Canadian girl too, weird) and it was a great surprise to find out that the rest of the record was better than i remember.

all those people freaking out about British Sea Power should hear this stuff.

I actually prefer Fake. Seriously underrated gem. Last track slays me every time.

So I'm listening to this and I kind of like it. Should I check out British Sea Power now? laugh.gif

uh, there's no similarity.

adorable is on the very pop-ish end of the shoegazer spectrum.

BSP just put out a vaguely post-punk but pretty mainstream british rock record (and a very good one). It's what you might wind up with if you crossed Everything Must Go with Siamese Dream.

ugh, this on the other hand is very "house of love" -ish. Not even what I'd think to call shoegaze at first, though there are plenty of textures going around from the guitars. Who am I to argue about genre, though.

yeah, i wasn't saying that they sound alike really, i just think anyone that likes good modern rock music would like this...

so sickpup, that Adorable - Fake you posted, i've never heard it, is it much different?
Very Metal
I don't know, I think the BSP comparison is quite apt, in that both bands clearly owe a lot to Echo & The Bunnymen. The new British Sea Power sounds nothing like Siamese Dream or Manic Street Preachers at all! I don't hear that.

well, that's what i meant, that they both kinda have that late eighties new wave/brit thing going.

but yeah, thanks for reminding me of this band sickpup, i had it blasting in the car today and it felt great.
Very Metal
Yeah, I pulled out this record and the Pale Saints' "the Comforts of Madness"- the two great overlooked shoegazer records. It's strange how much it feels like listening to "Nuggets" at this point.
Ent
I'll check it out if I can find it somewhere.

Waving Flags sounds very Design for Life to me -- big football anthem.

Siamese Dream to underscore that it's somewhat arty for a mainstream record, not so much that they are similar in sound. As I said before:

shoegaze : Smashing Pumpkins :: post-punk : British Sea Power

And I don't see how on earth you can equate Adorable to BSP.

well, it still sounds like them, if that's what you're asking. it relies less on feel and more on songs -- pixies/american indie influence more overt and palpable. definitely worth seeking out.
