My parents seperated after 37 years of marriage, and that pretty much eclipses everything else in my memory, so I guess it was a pretty bad year. Although I'm pretty sure I was at Stonehenge that Summer, so...

1999.
The year of 200 Cigarettes and Varsity Blues.
It's all coming back to me.

Fragile & Make Yourself came out, Chris Whitley released At Martyr's, and Jeff Beck released Who Else! Pearls hidden within a slimy oyster.

I'd like to write a book about the films of 1999 and how great/important they were.
Star Wars Episode 1- Say what you will about how shitty the movie is, it was a landmark film for special effects, paving the way for CGI characters (Golum alone makes up for Jar Jar Binks).
Matrix - Handily outshining Star Wars.
American Pie - Completely reopened the possibilities for R-rated comedies. Judd Apatow thanks you.
Being John Malkovich
The Blair Witch Project - quality can be debated, but obviously a massive turning point for independent films.
Boys Don't Cry
Cradle Will Rock - I fucking love this movie.
Existenz
Fight Club
Iron Giant
Magnolia
Messenger: Joan of Arc (Personal Fav)
Office Space
Sixth Sense
South Park
The Straight Story
Three Kings

Add to that,
Limbo, The War Zone, The Insider, Election, Mr. Death, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Limey, My Best Fiend and I'm sure tons more that I'm forgetting right now.

The '90s already would have been the best decade for film ever, but then it's like
Bowfinger
Go
Three Kings
Being John Malkovich
Dick
Toy Story 2
and a million others.
There was no better period to be watching TV and seeing trailers for upcoming mainstream feature films. None. Pinnacle for "teen" cinema or whatever, as well.

I got glandular fever, nearly six months off work on full pay with no questions askedand very little discomfort after the first month. One of the top 3 years of my life, maybe the best.

I'll take a bad puppet over a good CGI character every time. This is like saying the Red Hot Chili Peppers were innovative. Sure they were, but as a means to a horrific end.
1999 was a great year for me.

I can't decide which is worse. Bad puppet Yoda in
Episode One or bad CG Yoda in
Episodes 2 and
3.

January-April 1999 were probably 4 of the worst months of my life.
The rest of the year was pretty great after I moved to Chicago. I can't believe its been almost a decade.
