NEW YORK -- Banned by Comedy Central from showing an image of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the creators of "South Park" skewered their own network for hypocrisy in the cartoon's most recent episode.
The comedy -- in an episode aired during Holy Week for Christians -- instead featured an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President Bush and the American flag.
In an elaborately constructed two-part episode of their Peabody Award-winning cartoon, "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker intended to comment on the controversy created by a Danish newspaper's publishing of caricatures of Muhammad. Muslims consider any physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous.
When the cartoons were reprinted in newspapers worldwide in January and February, it sparked a wave of protests primarily in Islamic countries.
Parker and Stone were angered when told by Comedy Central several weeks ago that they could not run an image of Muhammad, according to a person close to the show who didn't want to be identified because of the issue's sensitivity.
The network's decision was made over concerns for public safety, the person said.
Comedy Central said in a statement issued Thursday: "In light of recent world events, we feel we made the right decision." Its executives would not comment further.
As is often the case with Parker and Stone, they built "South Park" around the incident. In Wednesday's episode, the character Kyle is shown trying to persuade a Fox network executive to air an uncensored "Family Guy" even though it had an image of Muhammad.
"Either it's all OK, or none of it is," Kyle said. "Do the right thing."
The executive decides to strike a blow for free speech and agrees to show it. But at the point where Muhammad is to be seen, the screen is filled with the message: "Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Muhammad on their network."
It is followed shortly by the images of Christ, Bush and the flag.
A frequent "South Park" critic, William Donohue of the anti-defamation group Catholic League, called on Parker and Stone to resign out of principle for being censored.
"The ultimate hypocrite is not Comedy Central -- that's their decision not to show the image of Muhammad or not -- it's Parker and Stone," he said. "Like little whores, they'll sit there and grab the bucks. They'll sit there and they'll whine and they'll take their shot at Jesus. That's their stock in trade."
Parker and Stone did not immediately respond to a request through a spokesman for comment.
It's the second run-in over religion in a few months for the satirists. Comedy Central pulled a March rerun of a "South Park" episode that mocked Scientologists. Isaac Hayes, a Scientologist who voiced the Chef character on the show, resigned in protest over the episode.
"South Park" again got the last word last month with an episode where Chef was seemingly killed and mourned as a jolly guy whose brains were scrambled by the "Super Adventure Club," which turns its members into pedophiles.
Only last week, "South Park" won broadcasting's prestigious Peabody. Awards director Horace Newcomb said at the time that by its offensiveness, the show "reminds us of the need for being tolerant."
The satire on this show just keeps getting better. It was a very funny episode, although I'm not sure how the humour will keep after repeated viewings; but the message is one that desparately needed to be said.

I think it's funny (and sadly predictable) that this guy completely missed the point of the joke.

You just beat me to that post, Slackmo. The episode about the Hybrid cars and the Smug Cloud had virtually no jokes in it. And the anti-Hollywood and anti-half assed liberal activism stance that they like to take is growing very stale and predictable.
But I think the last two episodes were a return to form for the show. The show worked very with the censorship and the defamation of all things American afterwards was a nice touch. The critique on Family Guy was pretty spot on as well. And the Bart Simpson character dropping an F bomb was a hell of an elevation.

I was pretty glad they took a few shots at themselves as well. Brought some much needed levity to the episode.
Also, while I initially thought Matt and Trey both hated Family Guy, it seems like they ended up at some sort of middle ground (i.e. Cartman hates it, and Kyle loves it), so I wouldn't be surprised if if that split was indicative of Matt and Trey's own tastes.

I got the feeling that they dig it and respect it, but wanted to make the point of how much harder their job is because of how random the Family Guy jokes can be.

This is what Trey Parker said about Family Guy a few months ago: "When people say to me, 'God, you guys have one of the best shows on television. You and Family Guy.' That fucking hurts so bad", to which Parker agreed: "Very well said. It's such a kick in the balls."
I thought the last two episodes where great, but my roommate felt let down by the second part. I think it's because he was expected nonstop ripping on Family Guy (a show he likes), and instead got a layed episode about censorship, religion, terrorism, and other world events (that he has no clue about). I'll admit that South Park has tended to get a little preachy over the last few years, but I still think that people that complain about it the most are ones that aren't informed to know any background information on the target.

really liked part one--Cartman's complaints about hating being compared to Family Guy probably won't be topped this season, and the FG parody was dead-on in general--but part two was just way too out there. Manatees? Bart Simpson? Cartman with a gun? Too much.

As for the episode, it was pretty good, and a nice critisism of the double standard that you could do what every you want to Jesus, but other religions are taboo now.
As for Muhammed on the show.

I've read that conspiracy theory. I hope it's not true. Despite the fact that I disagree with Comedy Central's "censorship"; the fact of the matter is that Comedy Central has given Matt and Trey more freedom than they would have gotten at any other network...and what they're doing is basically throwing a tantrum (if in fact they are rebelling).
One of the other theories is that they simply wrote the episode while stoned, and subsequenly realized that it sucked; and thus the ending "moral" that you should only get stoned to reward yourself for good work...not get stoned in order to work.
I think I buy into the latter as more likely.

What exactly is this 'conspiracy theory' you mention? I haven't heard it yet. Is it just that Matt and Trey are upset about the Mohammed censorship so they're going to write episodes that suck?
Though, I have to admit it's funny that there are 'theories' to explain one crappy episode. Even if the episode was really stupid.

That episode last night wasn't really funny at all. It seemed like they just had one gross out gag (the Super Nanny eating her own shit), and made a preachy episode about spoiled children being the product of bored parents needing to be a child's friend. Maybe I just know a few too many children who walk all over their parents, but the whole episode just made me cringe.

i thought last night's was pretty good, at least for the new season, which has been not that great. Don't dig too deep into the meaning, because then a lot of South Park gets rather preachy. The Dog Whisperer scenes had me cracking up, and Cartman's first nanny was also quite fun. The only reason they had his mom fail at the end was to wrap the episode up so Cartman could reappear as his old self next week without people scratching their heads. Of course, anyone who would bother scratching their heads at that...well...

Bingo, the only problem is that the first two episodes of the season set this season up to be heavy on the multilevel social commentary. But this episode harolded back to older seasons. Found it to be highly amusing, and the fact that someone got the better of Cartman so simply and a little commentary on why kids like Eric are they way they are made it very good.

So last night's episode was pretty good. Great job of humorizing video game addiction; especially the emptiness of video game victory. I was a little surprised that it was a straight up funny episode with no political commentarty, especially in light of the recent Mel Gibson and Foley scandals; but that was also a little refreshing after last season.
