I've only seen seasons 1 & 2, and i'm rewatching season 1 right now. I grew up on Homicide, which was also produced by David Simon, and I've read his non-fiction book Homicide as well; really, the wire is where its at though, like a more fully realized Homicide.
Anyone else like these band?

This is probably my all-time favorite television drama.
Got into it during season 3, and then rented the season 1 & 2 dvds, which I would stay up watching until two or three in the morning, because I was so hooked on it.
Very excited for the new season to start.

One of those shows that, when it debuted I was all over it (due to Homicide having been my favorite show ever) and then missed an episode and fell out of line on it. I rented the first two seasons on DVD back in May/June and was completely sucked in. It is an unbelievably great show that manages to say everything about everything evenly and maturely and remains entertaining.
I've been watching the season 3 re-runs on HBO this summer and cannot wait for season 4 to start.
Season 3 isn't on DVD yet, btw.
And Omar's great.

The Wire season 3 isn't out until August it says on Netflix.
And I loved Season 1 a lot, season 2 took a lot of getting into because of the moving away from the Barksdale crew into the dock workers, but that ended up bearing good fruit. Season 3 is damn interesting because of the Lt.'s idea of dealing with the drug trade.
And Stringer Bell is one compelling mothafucka. That guy's got it all figured out and now he's dealing with his partner Barksdale who's only interested in crackin' heads and dealing on corners.

Chapter on drug dealers in Freakonomics really reminded me of Stringer Bell a lot.

Chicago would make such a good setting for a wire-type show. You want to see corrupt city officials, huge drug cartels, massive city housing projects, issues of class, race, institution vs. individual conflict, violent cops, good cops, working class union communities, bad cops, etc etc etc...its like a 10x as large baltimore.

Yes, the first and third seasons are perfect. I got tired of hanging out w/ the corrupt union at the docks during season two, but the final episode that year was probably the best of the series. No one is happy at the end, the way I like it.

I have been considering getting into to this show on DVD because I don't have HBO and some people that I trust have vouched that the show is one of the best.....
but after it has been endorsed by both deej and Bhickman, I feel resigned to the fact that the show must definitely suck complete ass, since this logic is always perfect.

Best show ever, hands down. I've just finished watching S.1 on DVD for the 2nd time and am just starting again on S.2.
I agree Omar is the best TV character going around, but there are so many others - Bunk, Stringer, Bubbles, McNulty, the Sobotkas, Lester Freamon, it just goes on and on.
The attention to detail that goes into every scene is amazing. At the end of each episode when that great closing credits music kicks in, you sit back, take a deep breath and realize that you've just watched something great, and you can't wait to watch the next episode.
Can't wait for S.4.

Yeah, it's hard to keep a lot of the narrative steam going without being able to take in bigger chunks. I don't have Comcast On-Demand anymore, but they had the entire season 3 up for a while.

For you I would suggest some pantsuits, perhaps muted in color, something to offset Detective Moreland's pinstripe lawyerly affectations and the brash tweedy impertinence of Detective Freamon. Rawls is watching on this one, let's at least pretend like we got a fucking clue.

Listen to me, McNulty. You took a lot of risks. You played a lot of wild cards. And, you made a lot of fucking people do a lot of things they didn't want to do. You, McNulty are a gaping asshole. I know it, and I'll be fucked if everybody in CID didn't know it. But, I'll be also fucked if I let you sit here and think you did a single fucking thing to get a fucking police shot. Believe it or not, not everything is about you. Get it into your head McNulty it's not your fault. And the motherfucker telling you this, he fucking hates your guts. So, you know, that if it was your fault, I'd be the first son of a bitch to tell you. Shit went bad, she took two for the company. That's the only lesson here.
